Anger spills on to streets after Nikol Pashinyan fails to win backing to become PM

Tens of thousands of people have converged on the Armenian capital, blocking roads and government houses, after the ruling party repudiated the opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan's bid to become prime minister.

Protesters paralysed Yerevan, with nearly all streets closed to traffic and many stores shut, AFP correspondents reported. Officials said suburban train service is disrupted and the road connecting Yerevan with its airport was blocked.

Crowds of protesters across the city waved national flags, blew vuvuzelas and wailed” Free, independent Armenia !”.

Days of protests in the small former Soviet state have created a stalemate between Pashinyan's advocates, who have mobilised thousands of people to take to the streets, and a ruling elite that is determined to hold on to power and still controls the security apparatus.

Pashinyan exhorted Armenians to launch a general strike after the ruling Republican party thwarted his attempt to take over as “ministers ” on Tuesday evening.
