The United States' new Secretary of State meets with Russia's Foreign Minister in his first diplomatic trip abroad.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says he and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed a "range of issues" in an hourlong meeting Feb.

He mentioned they talked about Crimea, saying he expects Russia to "de-escalate the violence in Ukraine.

" Lavrov said after the meeting they did not discuss the issue of U.

sanctions imposed on Russia.

However, he mentioned they had agreed to work together to fight terrorism in the Middle East.

Secretary of Defense James Mattis sent a different message though at a NATO meeting in Brussels the same day.

Mattis said the U.

isn't "in a position right now to collaborate on a military level" with Russia, and that Russia must "prove itself" before the U.

will agree to any military cooperation.
